Abstract
Education in its nature, quality, finality and the modes of
offering, has been an object of scientific inquiries down the
ages. This paper critically reflects and analyzes the
philosophical doctrine on final causality seeking to show how a
final cause as a cause of all causes determines or influences the
nature and quality of education.Discussion is based on the
Ancient Greek Philosophers Plato and Aristotle as the classical
protagonists of both the doctrine of causality and of the
philosophical thought on education. The discussion includes
two schools of thought of the postmodern era: Pragmatism with
an American base and Ujamaa from the African perspective.
Basing on the Aristotelian understanding of the nature and
features of a final cause, it is concluded that an appropriate
educational framework is determined by an appropriate end-inview of the whole enterprise of education.
