About the Faculty

The Ruaha Catholic University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is among the oldest faculties at the University. It was introduced in the academic year 2008/2009.
The establishment of this faculty capitalized on the purposive determination of the government of the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) to increase enrolment of education students in universities as a strategy to reduce a severe shortage of teachers in secondary schools which had grown and continue to grow over time. It is for this reason that the Faculty of Arts and Social Science launched a Bachelor of Arts with Education (BAED) programme. The faculty strives to become an academic locus in Tanzania that produces the most distinguished social scientists, researchers and educators who will fit into the global job-market. The faculty has different degree options that are offered in our two Departments namely; the Department of Humanities and the Department of Languages
The teaching subjects specializations that are offered under the Bachelor of Arts with Education are as follows:

Bachelor of Arts with Education (Geography & IT)
Bachelor of Arts with Education (Geography & Kiswahili)
Bachelor of Arts with Education (Geography & Literature)
Bachelor of Science with Education (Geography & Mathematics)
Apart from the Bachelor of Arts with Education programme, the faculty also offers the Certificate and Diploma in Librarianship and Information Technology.
The teaching and learning in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is through both theoretical and practical approaches. The aim is to equip students with both theoretical and practical tools necessary for analyzing and solving both social and economic problems.
Plans are underway to introduce new programmes, including:
Master of Arts in Kiswahili Literature (Fasihi ya Kiswahili)
Bachelor of Arts –Kiswahili
Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Environmental Health Studies.
Certificate and Diploma in Community Development and
Certificate and Diploma in Tourism
Besides the teaching activities, the Faculty also observes other core functions of the University operations - i.e. research and community services. The academic members of staff in the faculty engage in research and publications in their areas of specialization. The faculty has a Journal by name of Ruaha Journal of Arts and Social Sciences (RUJASS) in which research results are published biannually in form of articles. Students are also encouraged to submit their papers in this journal. In addition to RUJASS, the faculty will soon launch another journal Jarida la Kiswahili for the same purpose of enhancing and promoting academic publications.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has in place a Center for Language and Culture, that was established in 2018. The centre provides language services to both local and foreign clienteles. The language services that are provided at the centre include teaching and learning of Kiswahili, English, French, Arabic, Korean and Chinese. Other academic services rendered are translations, editorial and interpretation works for the above-mentioned languages. The center also deals with promoting African Culture and Heritage.

External Links

Apart from collaboration with other faculties within the university, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has good national and international links with other universities. For instance, the faculty has an exchange programme with the University of Turin – Italy whereby students and staff from Turin come for programmes of their interest offered by the faculty while our students and staff also have an opportunity to go to Turin University as part of academic exchange.
