The Law programmes offered by RUCU prepare students to join either the legal profession or a number of other careers. The Faculty of Law has the obligation to offer a legal education aimed at providing theoretical knowledge, analytical and practical skills, which are necessary to produce a society-conscious lawyer / professional who can contribute to the development of his/her country and the international community.

Unique and vibrant university experience

The Faculty of Law at RUCU provides a unique and vibrant environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Faculty offers a well-supported environment with an excellent law library and great information technology resources.
There are over 700 full-time students studying in the Faculty of Law. Students work collegially at the Faculty and there is a dedicated law student association, the Law Society, which offers mentoring and support as well as organising law competitions and social events.

Postgraduate Programmes in Law

Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Human Rights Law

The LL.M. in Human Rights Law is a 14-month programme which intends to produce legal practitioners specialised in Human Rights Law. Students graduating with a specialisation such as the LL.M in Human Rights Law can look to the expanding market and professional choices available in this field. A wide range of career paths opening up include specialised human rights practice, work in the public sector and government, the East African Community or the African Union, international human rights and development agencies and organisations, grassroots advocacy and academics.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law

The Ph.D. in Law is a three-year (five-year part-time) programme designed to increase output of professionals highly specialised and conversant in law. The programme aims to contribute to the pool of potential researchers and policy analysts, and gradually build-up the number of highly skilled scholars in law and to increase output of professionals conversant with and specialists in African legal problems.

Admission Requirements.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law.
Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admission requirements as stipulated below:
• A candidate for Ph.D. should hold a Masters of Law (LL.M) degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 of this University or from any institution of Higher Learning recognized by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).
Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Human Rights Law.
To be considered for admission to the programme of the Master of Laws a candidate must be:

A. General Holder Requirements
(i) Holder of the degree of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from any institution of higher learning recognised by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).
(ii) A GPA of at least 3.0.

B. The Work Experience Consideration
(i) Holder of Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B.) with a GPA between 2.7 and 2.9.
(ii) Work experience or field attachment in any field of law for a reasonable amount of time.
Additional consideration will be given to candidates who have done further training, research or writing on an area of law.
(iii) Candidates in this category will be advised to select the LL.M programme which corresponds to their work experience.

Undergraduate Programmes in Law

RUCU’s Faculty of Law has a long history of providing an excellent legal education.

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)

RUCU’s Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is a four-year professional degree, which provides you with an excellent grounding in legal thinking, analytical skills, negotiation and decision-making.
Admission Requirements for Bachelor of Laws
Two principal passes in the following subjects: History, Geography, Kiswahili, English Language, French, Arabic, Fine Arts, Economics, Commerce, Accountancy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Advanced Mathematics, Agriculture, Computer Science or Nutrition. If one of the principal passes is not in English an applicant must have subsidiary pass in English at A-level or a minimum of “D” grade in English at O-Level.

Diploma in Law (DLAW)

The Diploma in Law programme is a two-year programme which intends to produce graduates with the necessary legal knowledge and skills for the manning of middle-level legal positions both in the public and private sectors. It can also serve as an equivalent entry qualification into the LL.B. degree for those applicants who do not qualify for direct entry.

Certificate in Law (CLAW)

The Certificate in Law programme is a one-year programme which intends to produce graduates with basic legal knowledge and skills. It can also serve as an equivalent entry qualification into the Diploma in Law programme for those applicants who do not qualify for direct entry.

Ruaha Law Review (RLR)

The Ruaha Law Review (RLR) is a Law Journal published two times per year under the Faculty of Law of Ruaha Catholic University. The RLR publishes articles which deal with Public and Private Law, International and Municipal Law with a specific focus on legal issues relating to Africa.
It is hoped that the RLR will promote debate on current African Legal issues and it will, consequently, open new areas of research and enable new questions to be asked so that the awareness of the role of justice in human development may always grow.

RUCU Human Rights Centre (RHRC)

The RUCU-Human Rights Centre (RHRC) at the Faculty of Law, Ruaha Catholic University (RUCU), strives to serve as a significant contributor to human rights education, policy formulation and legal reform for the new constitutional order.
The Centre employs relevant members of staff to run its programmes and activities. Members of staff are drawn from among members of the Faculty of Law (and where deemed appropriate, from other faculties as well as from students with requisite and relevant skills/qualifications). The Centre’s staffs are currently engaged on a full-time basis.

One final thought: you will hear it said that RUCU Faculty of Law is a great place to learn about Law. This is true.
